A Maine Saltworks

The first  solar evaporation room

Mighty steamy and hot here in the second evaporation room.

The third evaporation room where they let moisture drain out.

Maine Sea Salt Company

We took a diversion from our cleanup and closing up activities helping the folks close up the summer cottage for the winter for a day of driving and antiquing in the country.
We found the Maine Sea Salt company which is the first saltworks in Maine to be set up in 200 years.
I had just been reading a fascinating book on the history of salt so this was right up my alley.

You'll get a report on the wonderful finds of that day on another post.

  1. Thanks for the tour. I love smoked sea salt, but you only need a tiny bit
it has so much aroma. I never realized they smoked it in small batches like
that though, lots of hand work involved. Wow. xox Corrine

  2. The process is so involved and interesting! Does the solar evaporation area smell like the sea?

  3. It smells more strongly chemical than the sea to me. I think the seaweed and other life in the ocean give it that wonderful smell but when it's refined it isn't quite as pleasant. I do love the smoked salt though!

Just a note to thank you so much for participating in the Butterfly Effect - your butterfly has landed safely in one piece! It's beautiful just so sweet. I will be posting an update later today with it featured.
