My Vitreous Humour

If you read my last post about my worries about the visual disturbances I was experiencing and how I was worried that it might have something to do with all of the torching I'd been doing recently, I have since had the occasion to go to an eye doctor to find out what's going on with my eyes.
Good news and bad news.
Good news is it's not from torching
Bad news is that it's nothing that can be fixed.
Ironically enough I am relieved that there's nothing that can be done and I don't have to curtail my artistic efforts. How's that for some reasoning?

It's my vitreous humour
My eye jelly is liquifying
Syneresis
I'm experiencing a vitreous tug which is causing the spots or shadows in my distance vision.
It will soon totally separate and there may be more exciting visuals to contend with.
But now I can try to ignore it rather than obsess about street signs pixelating in the distance.
Oh, and I  have an astigmatism!
and I should be using #4 strength reading glasses and not #2 as I have been.
And I'll be sporting progressive lenses all the time
not just reading glasses any more.
It's because I'M GETTING OLD!

And on top of that I saw this little guy

Turn into this
...celebrating my son's 29th birthday this last weekend.
Happy birthday Cass-man!

  1. O mY Kimberly!

  2. Getting old does suck big time! Sorry for the eye troubles. Just think you might make some really cool stuff with the "look" you are seeing. Gotta think positive! ;)

    1. Thanks, Dawn. It was the worrying about it that made it worse.

  4. Oh goodness Kimbucha, I am glad you are taking it all in stride. I have an astigmatism too but luckily #2 is handling it just fine. Liquifying anything in the eye sounds pretty sci-fi, high drama from the mistress of the odd. Casey looks cute all painted!! Getting old, no, surely just slightly tarnished. xox

    1. I'm willing to do anything extra that might help. Thinking of some vitamins that are beneficial for eye health.

  7. I can sympathise eye problems are scary. I've been wearing glasses since I was 5 years old, so I'm well used to seeing the world through a frame and the first thing in the morning blur.

    1. Yes, apparently it's not a condition that contacts are appropriate for so frames it is.

    1. Love that last line! I guess your lens goes from crystal clear to amber to root beer with age.
      Thanks for your commiseration.

  9. Well crap. You're right though...at least you can keep working with your torch. I've been seeing those little floaters for a lot of years...I don't suppose that's related, but I know how it freaks you out when you first notice a change. I take a daily vitamin in addition to an Eye Cap which is supposed to have extra benefits for the eyes - I have no idea if they help, but my Mom has macular degeneration so I'm gonna do anything I can to prevent that.

    1. Yes, the floaters can have something to do with it actually.
I've got more of a shadow or spot sensation as if I just looked at something bright and looked away.

  11. I'm glad you are taking this eye thing all in stride. I would be freaking out at the thought of eye jelly, and liquifying, syneresis, and totally separating.

And yes, they do grow so fast. My daughter just turned 24, and my son 20. I still see them a the little ones with wide-eyed wonder and smiles on their faces.

... and just hope to be around long enough to witness it our children going through the inevitable aging process, I don't know!

  12. I'm having a virtual tug on my heart hearing about your vitreous tug. :(
You're not old, Kim. We're the same age. We're just well seasoned.

  13. seems to me that there is little to recommend this growing old business. Do you think the getting of wisdom compensates for dodgy knees, bung eyesight and hairy ears? Your boy has grown into a fine looking bloke - congrats to you both on his 29th!

  18. I'm so glad that it isn't the torch giving you problems! It's amazing how much eyes affect what you do. I'm thinking I have to go into progressives, too...my eyes are so bothersome and painful...just hard to work anymore. So fun getting older!

  19. Late to the party, but glad I am here and found you through Anvil. My man has the same issues with spots in his eyes, hmm... we thought it had something to do perhaps with this Lasik surgery. Sorry to hear about your eye jelly, but loving the beauty you create in your shop, and that your eyes curate on Pinterest. Your son is beautiful! Beards and flowers go really well together... I mean that in all seriousness.

  20. Yup I'm not enjoying this aging thing but it's best not to dwell on it and just get on with life, as you are. My first born is now 33!

  21. My first born is 45...getting old surely sucks! Sorry to hear of your eye problems Kim, I admire how you're dealing with it. Sending good wishes to ya.

I had cataract surgery, I had no idea how bad my eyes really were till after that marvelous surgery. I can see great now but need glasses for reading and close up work.

Happy Birthday to your handsome son, great photo of him. Love the face paint...you did good MamaKim!!

  23. Your son looks beautiful.

Eye thing happened to my husband. He thought he was dying and ran to doctor terrified. Now its as if nothing happened. Weird.

Protect eyes with torch. The cones burn out.

  24. My husband has the same problem and he was given drops which "may or may not improve things". Fortunately his eyes have improved immensely for the time being.I hope yours do too. Getting old is not for sissies!!
